Welcome to the Social Work Commons

Welcome to Social Work Commons! The Commons is a small but growing collection of instructional resources including video, audio, and interactive material used and sometimes developed, by the Columbia University School of Social Work faculty. These resources are distinct from training, documentary, and feature films found in the Columbia Library catalog in that they are:

  • video clips from selected clinical training videos (e.g., DSM-IV Bipoloar I Disorder) and documentaries (e.g., Project Rebirth)
  • audio clips (e.g., Schizophrenia: Stigma and Social Policy)
  • digitized segments from television shows or movies that illustrate social work content (e.g., Sopranos)
  • interactive media developed as a part of a social work intervention (e.g., Project Connect and diaBeaters!)

Each resource includes a brief description, keywords, course number and name associated with the resource, Method, Field of Practice, availability of closed captioning, and the year produced.

While not all courses currently have resources in the Social Work Commons, we hope to add them over time. If you have rich media resources that you own (e.g., model interviewing session or an interview with an expert) and would like to contribute, please contact us.

Many thanks to the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning and the School’s Office of Computing and Instructional Technology team for creating this important instructional resource.  Find errors? Have suggestions? Please let us know at
